We had another training session on the 26th of May. It was held at JJC and we had a very small but cooperative group.

On the coming 31st of May, there'll be another training session at NYJC. So stay tune for more updates!!!

Museum Trip (Singapore Cheshire Home)

Hi, first time posting, don’t really know what is expected. I shall just try la, huh?

Anyway on the 8 of March, a group of volunteers went on a museum trip with the elderly from the Singapore Cheshire Home. Thanks a lot to student volunteers from YV07 & RJC, and SVC (Marco, Yuli and Timothy) for their participation, and also Siew Mui & Xue Ping for their assistance! Thanks all for making the trip possible!

We brought the elderly around the Greek masterpieces exhibition which was only available for a certain period of time and also those permanent exhibition regarding Singapore, for example the photography, food, film sections etc. The elderly I was with had a great time there, but frankly speaking I’m not sure if all/most of the elderly enjoyed themselves. It was actually a totally new experience organizing such an event involving 2 organizations and to handle all the unexpected circumstances, and please let me take this chance here to apologize for any mistakes I made while organizing the trip! Sincerely sorry!

But there’s one thing I’m sure- Our student volunteers (especially from YV and RJC) learnt something, like being a tour guide of the exhibition and to communicate efficiently with the elderly, everyone made new friends, and Yu Li also had a good time recruiting people for her ACE camp right!

olympic dream 2008

it's oct 2007 but i can feel 2008 has arrived.

we are entering an exciting year with plans for our last instalment of the olympic dream. Xueping has gladly accepted chairmanship and we are starting to recruit members as well as forming plans.

SMU will be taking up the 100,000 laps challenge and we've found Yishu who will lead his Youth Executive Committee in taking up the swimming challenge. SVC will champion a third sport - Boccia in conjunction with our ACE programme.

Also, we've been offered 3 places to go with Singapore Disability Sports Council to the Asean paragames in Jan. We've not rec'd much details but the opportunity to attend the Asean games is definitely something which SVC will be looking forward to. will be getting more details and update everyone again.

wld like to have everyone involved in Olympic Dream 2008. Do step forward if you want to take up the challenge in shaping the olympic dream.

To all who managed to squeeze the SVC Retreat in between your hectic schedule, let me give you my sincere salute. It was, after all, a Saturday – the most precious day of the week! (Well, at least to me, it is…) With the examination period just around the corner, it was tremendously heartening to see quite a few JC2 students turning up.

Honestly, I had expected Siew Mui to be upset with the terrible attendance, but our president totally surprised me when she said, “I’m very happy that so many of you are here.” With fewer than 30 participants present, my laughter could hardly be contained. Nonetheless, the amusement which I had felt slowly transformed into a tinge of melancholy when she mentioned that in the past, they couldn’t even muster enough volunteers to hold a retreat. Abruptly, I recalled the turnout for the previous retreat held at Vick’s kampong, and discovered that she’s right indeed. The “terrible” attendance, it seems, wasn’t that terrible at all.

In fact, keeping the group small has its advantages. I fully enjoyed the cosiness of the session, where everyone got the chance to become acquainted with everyone else. I didn’t know, for instance, that Yihui and Daniel like to play volleyball. Neither did I realise that Hong Ming is horny. Oh wait; actually I do. Whoops! =X I’m not the type who enjoys going to big parties and being surrounded by crowds of half-naked strangers, so such a setting is definitely more welcoming for someone like myself. Everyone in attendance was also able to actively contribute to our collective brainstorming and interactive presentations unreservedly. Even though the group was small, there was an observably endless stream of great ideas. Our Publicity Sub-Committee, in particular, managed to gather some valuable suggestions which can be incorporated into our brochures and video! Thanks to all who chipped in =)

All in all, it was undoubtedly a fruitful get-together for SVC volunteers. For those who couldn’t make it for the retreat, we look forward to your participation in the next! Please don’t feel intimidated by terms like “retreats” or “AGM”; they are not as boring as they sound. I guarantee (+ warranty + chop + signature) that you can find a few familiar faces at each meeting, since there has been a desirable mix of new birds, old birds and returning birds so far.

You're never alone in your volunteering journey.

BOCCIA Competition

Hey!

It is really a great eye opener to see BOCCIA players from different countries pitting their skills against each other. Some of them are really accurate at throwing, their ball just land directly beside the white ball. It is simply Awesome! They adopt different strategy when they play against different players and at different situations. Seeing how they compete, I would say BOCCIA is really a game that requires good strategy and skills to win the game. I feel that it is really a good learning ground for us to improve on our coaching in BOCCIA for the next batch of ACE participants. We saw how international experienced judgers from the BOCCIA Association judge and conduct the game and how the helpers did the score keeping. It is so different from how we have been doing. There are like so many things we can improve on. It is such a pity that you and other volunteers couldn't make it.

Anyways, attched are some of the pictures we took at the event. We were too absorbed into watching the competition, so dint take much pictures.

The last 4 pics are pictures of their banners, thought its pretty well done, so perhaps you may want to take a look and maybe we can do something like this? hahaha

More olympic dreams to come

At about 0730 that day 15.07.07:
The only picture i took that day at the event, Bright early morning just as the guest of honour, Mr Teo Ser Luck, started off the run.
So nice to see people of all types (all age, races etc.) contributing to our cause =) ...happy to see a whole group of elderly people from some hougangcc club walking together. They were pretty serious, overheard them conversing amongst themselves about not eating too much breakfast 'cos of having to do the walk. Another interesting sight was of a Malay lady, mother of two, pushing a baby trolley with two kids on it. So every round she completes clocks in 3 rounds for us...aha! Overall, the atmostphere was lively... the feel was good... think JJC students livened up the event really well with the mass dances & non-stop emceeing ;p must really give it to them. this is called the "enpowerment of youth" (svc enpowering youth or the spirit of youth enpowering us all? aha that for u all to think about)

For me, my parents came down with me early in the morning to support =D. I had a good run in the morning...but stopped after 14 rounds... dragged on until the afternoon; walking with Jen-Kit & See Meng and completing 54 round in total!

Too bad we didn't come near to our targets but well that leaves us with more to look forward to next year, right? - Yihui

olympic dream - around the world in a day

we clocked a total of 35ooo laps over about 19 hours. though the target was 100,000 laps, we were not disappointed with the shortfall. we were happy to have witnessed several olympic dream moments - one of it, when the SMU students rallied and did the remaining laps together with the wheelchair user who was short of 6 laps to clock 50 laps for a medal. And i witnessed all svc volunteers doing their best to clock as many laps they came. those turned up for meeting on 16 july appeared a shade darker and some skin burnt by the sun. :p

amount raised is still unknown. collecting back all pledge cards by 4 aug.

i was impressed by this hope church guy who clocked a total of 77 laps. think he clocked the most number of laps. saw him at the track and he was running and running. he wears a nose ring and looked super fit.

my frens came! - Daisy, Ken san, Louis, Joyce, Lilian, Priscilla, Vincent, John, Kian Beng and Kelvin Tan. was busy juggling my frens while doing my laps, settling svc stuff and ensuring that my frens are having fun. Was most impressed by Lilian. She didn't tot that she will be walking but ended doing 11 laps! :)

And it was really great meeting our long time SVC volunteers again:
- Jen Kit, Soo Rei and Tian Shun who are getting married, liyu and see meng (my teammates of the rolling good times)

happy that the younger ones came too. next year's olympic dream will be bigger and more exciting. keep volunteering!

SVC BBQ - 16 june 2007

finally, at last, YIPPEE! Yihui and Hongming have got our blog going again. :)

here are some pictures from our SVC bbq held at Vick's place. it was rejuvenation for svc as we talked about our commitment to svc. some of us got connected to the happenings of svc again...

from the sharing that nite, it's relationships that bind us to SVC. And... for many of us, SVC provided opportunities and experiences which touched our hearts.
